'''Repatriation of the Buddha''' (simplified Chinese: <span lang="zh-Hans">送佛归殿</span>; traditional Chinese: <span lang="zh-Hant">送佛歸殿</span>) is a basic checkmate pattern in xiangqi. A soldier, also called a pawn, advances with successive checks, forcing the opposing general back until it is mated. A cannon commonly supports the soldier, and a chariot or horse sacrifice may prepare the attack.<ref name="png-445">Jim Png Hau Cheng (June 2017). ''Basic Xiangqi Checkmate Methods'', published by the World Xiangqi Federation and the Chinese Xiangqi Association, includes the pattern among its twenty-six basic mating methods. Jim Png Hau Cheng's ''Lexicon of Xiangqi (Chinese Chess) Terms in English'' defines it as a cannon-and-pawn combination and attributes its example to the classical manual ''Elegant Pastime'' (<span lang="zh">适情雅趣</span>).<ref name="wxf23" /><ref name="png-445" />
The technique is a settled item in published xiangqi literature rather than a curiosity of online instruction. == Terminology and classification ==
The position normally used to introduce the method is a classical puzzle, and Png's Lexicon states that its own example "was collected in the ''Elegant Pastime Manual'' and was probably how the checkmate got its name".<ref name="png-445" /> The same name is also used for a capturing method in Go and appears in writing on the Chinese trick-taking card game <span lang="zh">双升</span>.<ref name="s001" /><ref name="s037">知乎专栏 (2023-01-08). "[https://zhuanlan.zhihu.com/p/597415057 双升实用技术:漏一手与送佛归殿]" [Practical technique in Double Upgrade: the missed move and Repatriation of the Buddha].</ref>
Png describes Repatriation of the Buddha as an endgame technique in which a remaining pawn advances repeatedly with assistance from a cannon or its own general. His related entries distinguish the broader pawn attack from particular mating combinations:<ref name="png-445" /><ref name="png-413" /><ref name="png-416" />

The two book definitions are close paraphrases of each other. The ''Lexicon of Xiangqi (Chinese Chess) Terms in English'' introduces the headword as
Chinese instructional sources also use the names as alternatives. The 360 Baike entry lists <span lang="zh">三进兵</span>, <span lang="zh">太监追皇上</span> (the Eunuch Chases the Emperor) and <span lang="zh">凤凰三点头</span> (the Phoenix Nods Three Times) under <span lang="zh">送佛归殿</span>; a Sina Kandian primer lists the same group under <span lang="zh">三进兵</span>. <blockquote>The Repatriation of the Buddha Checkmate is one of the basic kills that is a cannon-pawn combinational kill. It refers to advancing one pawn consecutively a few times for a checkmate. The checkmate is possible with the assistance of a cannon. This checkmate technique is usually present in the endgame where most of the other material have been lost. The remaining pawn on the board charges forward with help from his own king or cannon to deliver a checkmate.<ref name="png-445" /></blockquote>
The 4399 endgame guide uses <span lang="zh">独卒擒王</span> (a lone soldier captures the general), with <span lang="zh">一卒送终</span>, <span lang="zh">太监追皇帝</span> and <span lang="zh">送佛归殿</span> as alternatives. It distinguishes this mate from <span lang="zh">三进兵</span>: in its definition, the former drives the general back to its starting square, whereas the latter may mate it elsewhere on the back rank.<ref name="s030" /> Chinese Chess Out Loud's 2026 course likewise gives Repatriation of the Buddha, Pawn Triple Advancement and Eunuch Chasing the Emperor separate entries. Its Repatriation examples include support from the general as well as from a cannon.<ref name="s095" />
''Basic Xiangqi Checkmate Methods'', published by the World Xiangqi Federation and the Chinese Xiangqi Association, defines the method as one in which "the attacking side pushes his Pawn forward, step by step, forcing the opponent's King return to its original place until it is mated".<ref name="wxf23" /> The book groups the method with the pawn combinations: it is method 23 in a chapter of twenty-six basic checkmates that runs through the chariot, horse, cannon, pawn and combined mating methods in turn.<ref name="wxf23" />
Png explains <span lang="zh">一卒送终</span> through the image of a pawn conducting funeral rites for the opposing general, and <span lang="zh">太监追皇帝</span> through that of a eunuch chasing an emperor. He also records “ghost”, “eunuch” and “servant” as pawn nicknames.<ref name="png-413" /><ref name="png-414">Jim Png Hau Cheng (June 2017). ''Lexicon of Xiangqi (Chinese Chess) Terms in English''. Chinese reference works define the same technique in similar terms. The 360 Baike entry files <span lang="zh">送佛归殿</span> under sports terminology and calls it a killing move (<span lang="zh">杀招</span>) in which a small soldier, cooperating with other pieces, harasses the enemy general step by step; it records the alternative names the Eunuch Chases the Emperor, Three Soldier Advances and the Phoenix Nods Three Times (<span lang="zh">凤凰三点头</span>).<ref name="s001" /> Chinese Wikipedia's article defines it as a tactic in which a soldier, assisted by other pieces, pursues and kills the opposing general step by step, "usually borrowing the strength of the general" (<span lang="zh">通常会借帅(将)力组杀</span>), and prints a six-diagram solution in which the soldier advances three times and Red wins.<ref name="zhwiki" /> A 2017 illustrated tutorial repeats the encyclopedia definition and adds that the device occurs often in endgames (<span lang="zh">残局</span>) and is therefore worth learning.<ref name="s029" />
The similarly named <span lang="zh">金鸡三点头</span> (the Golden Rooster Nods Three Times) is taught as a chariot attack in a 2025 lesson: the chariot captures an advisor and gives successive checks. It is described there as one check longer than <span lang="zh">进洞出洞</span>.<ref name="s014">爱下棋的冉帅 (2025-09-26). "[https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV12An3zkENk 象棋杀法宝典-金鸡三点头]" [Treasury of xiangqi mating methods: the Golden Rooster Nods Three Times]. 哔哩哔哩 (bilibili.com).</ref>
The two English-language references place the method in a small family of pawn mates. In the Lexicon, the "Pawn Funeral Checkmate" entry uses the simpler case — a lone pawn, helped by other pieces, delivering the final mate, usually after the pawn has advanced three times — and notes that "if the other assisting piece were a cannon, it would be known as the Repatriation of the Buddha Checkmate".<ref name="png-413" /> The "Pawn Triple Advancement Attack" entry, whose Chinese headword is <span lang="zh">三进兵</span> (Three Soldier Advances), defines the underlying attack as advancing a pawn continuously against the enemy king with the help of other pieces: if the attack ends in mate with a cannon, the result is the Repatriation of the Buddha Checkmate; if the final blow comes from the king or a chariot instead, the result is the pawn funeral checkmate.<ref name="png-416" /> The three headwords therefore describe the same mechanism at different levels of generality: the pawn attack, the generic pawn mate, and the cannon-assisted mate that carries the Buddha's name.<ref name="png-413" /><ref name="png-416" /><ref name="png-445" />
== Mechanism ==
== Mechanism ==
The mechanism is described in three parts. A heavy piece, most often a chariot, is sacrificed on the general's file, drawing the general onto a square where the soldier can attack it; the Lexicon labels the first move of its own example a "decoy sacrifice".<ref name="png-445" /><ref name="s029" /><ref name="s002" /> The soldier then advances with a cannon standing behind it on the same file, borrowing the cannon's strength, and the two-piece formation keeps the soldier safe: a defender that captures the soldier would leave a piece between the cannon and the general for the cannon to fire through, while a defender that captures the cannon instead leaves the soldier's check unanswered.<ref name="png-445" /><ref name="s029" /><ref name="s002" /><ref name="s013" /> The soldier finally advances with check, move after move, until the general has no escape.<ref name="png-445" /><ref name="s001" /><ref name="s029" />
A sacrifice can draw the general into the soldier's path. Png calls the opening chariot offer in his example a decoy sacrifice; the 2017 Baidu Experience tutorial describes the same tactical idea as <span lang="zh">弃子吸引</span>, sacrificing a piece to draw an opponent's piece onto the required square.<ref name="png-445" /><ref name="s029">qq631213796 (2017-06-16). "[https://jingyan.baidu.com/article/aa6a2c143ba5590d4c19c490.html 中国象棋杀法——送佛归殿]" [Chinese xiangqi mating methods: Repatriation of the Buddha]. 百度经验 (jingyan.baidu.com).</ref>
The tutorial that supplies the most widely copied diagram presents the device as an application of sacrifice-to-divert (<span lang="zh">弃子吸引</span>): one side gives material in order to produce the mating shape, catching the opponent unprepared.<ref name="s029" /> In that position Red offers the chariot on the general's file (车八平六; WXF R8=6), the general advances (K4+1), and the soldier then advances three times with check (P6+1) while Black's chariot can capture neither the soldier nor the cannon; the encyclopedia's own worked line is the same.<ref name="s001" /><ref name="s029" />
In the cannon-assisted formation, the soldier advances along the cannon's file. Chinese Chess Out Loud explains that the formation requires two pieces between the cannon and the opposing general, one of them the attacking soldier. Capturing the soldier would leave a single intervening piece, exposing the general to the cannon. The general must therefore retreat in the demonstrated positions, allowing another soldier check.<ref name="s095" /> In the featured example, Red begins with 车八平六 (WXF R8=6), Black replies K4+1, and Red follows with three P6+1 checks. Black's chariot cannot capture the soldier without exposing its general to the cannon, or capture the cannon while leaving the soldier's check unanswered.<ref name="s001" /><ref name="s029" />
The name <span lang="zh">三进兵</span> implies three advances of the soldier, and a Toutiao post about the pattern states the same feature, that the soldier advances three times to attack or control the general while other pieces seize the king.<ref name="s007">今慧技术. "[https://profile.zjurl.cn/rogue/ugc/profile/?user_id=58200433662 象棋实用杀着-三进兵]" [Practical xiangqi killing moves: Three Soldier Advances]. 今日头条 (toutiao.com).</ref> The count is a name and a shorthand rather than a strict rule. The encyclopedia's definition says only that the soldier harasses the general step by step; the tutorial's own two worked examples use two and three advances; and the 4399 endgame guide records a four-advance version in which the general is finally forced onto the centre file.<ref name="s001" /><ref name="s029" /><ref name="s030" /> The published books do the same: the Lexicon's example mates on the soldier's fourth consecutive advance, after the point where the classical record stops, and the three games in ''Basic Xiangqi Checkmate Methods'' likewise vary the number of soldier moves.<ref name="png-445" /><ref name="png-446">Jim Png Hau Cheng (June 2017). ''Lexicon of Xiangqi (Chinese Chess) Terms in English''. First printing. New Taipei City: Jim Png Hau Cheng. "Repatriation of the Buddha Checkmate" (conclusion), p. 446. ISBN 978-957-43-4707-0.</ref><ref name="wxf23" />
The supporting piece need not be a cannon in every source's definition. The 4399 guide illustrates a soldier supported by its own general; capturing that soldier would leave the generals facing each other on an open file. Chinese Chess Out Loud demonstrates the same use of the flying-general rule.<ref name="s030" /><ref name="s095" />
The attacking side's own pieces can also get in the way. A 2025 lesson in which Red has chariot, horse, cannon and soldier warns that playing the soldier mate too early fails because the soldier blocks the horse's leg (<span lang="zh">憋马腿</span>), and that the horse must first be moved to the diagonal attacking square the presenter calls <span lang="zh">八角马</span>.<ref name="s015">橘梅象棋 (2025-12-17). "[https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1qZq5B8EGQ 送佛归殿]" [Repatriation of the Buddha]. 哔哩哔哩 (bilibili.com).</ref>
Despite the name Three Soldier Advances, the examples vary in length. The Baidu Experience tutorial gives two- and three-advance mates; the 4399 guide gives a four-advance mate; and Png's continuation to his classical example also requires four forward soldier moves.<ref name="s029" /><ref name="s030" /><ref name="png-445" /><ref name="png-446">Jim Png Hau Cheng (June 2017). The line shown in the featured diagram is the common textbook form: the chariot is offered on the general's file, the general is driven forward, and three soldier checks finish the mate.<ref name="s001" /><ref name="s029" /><ref name="wxf23" /> Shorter and longer versions carry the same name. At depth 20 the engine reports "score mate 4" (mate in four Red moves); its principal variation is the recorded line P6+1 K4-1 P6+1 K4-1 P6+1 K4=5 P6+1. Playing the recorded line to the end leaves the engine with no reply, i.e. the final position is checkmate: the soldier on the back rank checks the general, and capturing it is illegal because the red general on the same open file would then face the black general. -->
In the second example, Red first sacrifices two chariots on the general's file, then completes the same four-advance soldier mate.<ref name="s030" /> Png illustrates his Pawn Funeral Checkmate entry with a similar two-chariot decoy sequence, credited to Tu Jingming's ''Xiangqi Dictionary'': 1. R7=6 K4+1 2. R8=6 K4+1 3. P6+1, followed by further soldier advances.<ref name="png-413" />
Heavier versions of the same idea are recorded as well. The 4399 guide's second study sacrifices two chariots in succession on the general's file before the soldier advances four times; the encyclopedia's second worked example does the same against a general boxed in by its own cannon in the palace centre, and the Toutiao article that equates the pattern with the Eunuch Chases the Emperor opens with a double chariot sacrifice.<ref name="s030" /><ref name="s002" /><ref name="s063">七里河发布 (2024-06-23). The 360 Baike entry for <span lang="zh">三进兵</span> also gives a double-chariot sacrifice against a general whose own cannon occupies the palace centre; a 2024 lesson titled the Eunuch Chases the Emperor begins with a double-chariot sacrifice.<ref name="s002">360百科 (baike.so.com). === Preparing the formation ===
Not every position that circulates under the name is sound. A Toutiao post asks whether a well-known <span lang="zh">送佛归殿</span> position leaves Red with nothing if Black simply declines to retreat the general, and the 2025 lesson on the "three nods" family withdraws one of its own puzzles after engine analysis found a defence.<ref name="s025">慢镜头. === Textbook variations ===
=== The three games in ''Basic Xiangqi Checkmate Methods'' ===
The World Xiangqi Federation and Chinese Xiangqi Association book teaches the method with three games, printed as figures 97, 98 and 99.<ref name="wxf23" />
Game 1 is the plainest. Red's chariot moves across to the general's file (R3=4), Black's general advances (K6+1), and the soldier then makes five moves — four advances with check and a sideways step — each time forcing the general back, until the chariot returns to the file to mate: "Red Pawn has made 5 moves, forcing Black King retreat step by step. Red takes an incidental checkmate to win the victory." The book notes the alternative defence — if Black steps the general sideways instead, P4+1 followed by R4=6 wins at once.<ref name="wxf23" />
Game 2 is the version that appears in all three published references and in the classical record. Red sacrifices both chariot and horse before the soldier mates: R6+4 K5=4, H9+8 K4+1, H8-6, K4+1, P7=6, H2+4, and then four soldier advances with check. The book's note reads: "By sacrificing his Chariot and Horse, Red forces Black King move to the top of Palace, putting him under the fire of Red Cannon and Pawn."<ref name="wxf23" />
''Basic Xiangqi Checkmate Methods'' illustrates the method in figures 97–99. The first example starts R3=4 K6+1. Red's soldier then makes four advances and a sideways move before the chariot mates with R4=6. The alternative defence K6=5 is answered by P4+1 K5=4 R4=6.<ref name="wxf23" />
Game 3 begins with a chariot sacrifice on the general's file and finishes with a double mate: Red mates simultaneously with the horse and the soldier, which the book calls a simultaneous smothered checkmate and "a rare and interesting position".<ref name="wxf23" />
The second example sacrifices a chariot and horse before four soldier advances complete the mate: 1. R6+4 K5=4 2. H9+8 K4+1 3. H8-6 K4+1 4. P7=6 H2+4, followed by the P6+1 checks. The book explains that the sacrifices draw the general to the front of its palace, into the cannon-and-soldier attack.<ref name="wxf23" />
The same body of play appears in the Lexicon's entry as figures 397 to 399. There the line runs R6+1, K5=4, H9+8, K4+1, H8-6, K4+1, P7=6, H2+4, P6+1, and the author then notes: "The moves in the ancient manual end here. The following moves were added to show the final kill" — 5. ... K4-1 6. P6+1 K4-1 7. P6+1 K4=5 8. P6+1, "Checkmate!"<ref name="png-445" /><ref name="png-446" /> The same line, ending in the same mate, is what the tutorial and the encyclopedia print in their shorter form.<ref name="s001" /><ref name="s029" />
The final example begins R8=6 C8=4 R6+1 K4+1 and ends in what the book describes as simultaneous smothered mate by the horse and soldier.<ref name="wxf23" />

The pattern circulates under several names whose relationship Chinese sources describe in different ways. On Baidu Baike the headword <span lang="zh">送佛归殿</span> is a redirect that "generally refers to" <span lang="zh">三进兵</span>, so Baidu Baike treats Three Soldier Advances as the main article title.<ref name="s004">百度百科 (baike.baidu.com). The 4399 guide draws an explicit distinction inside the family. It lists the pattern under the name <span lang="zh">独卒擒王</span> ("a lone soldier captures the king"), also called <span lang="zh">一卒送终</span>, the Eunuch Chases the Emperor, and Repatriation of the Buddha, and defines it as a soldier, aided by other pieces, checking the general step by step until it is driven back to its original square. The same page adds that the difference between <span lang="zh">三进兵</span> and <span lang="zh">独卒擒王</span> is that Three Soldier Advances mates the general anywhere on the back rank, whereas <span lang="zh">独卒擒王</span> requires driving the general back to its starting square before mating.<ref name="s030" /> That rule conflicts with the encyclopedia entries and with the Sina list, which treat the names as flat synonyms, and the disagreement remains unresolved.<ref name="s001" /><ref name="s054" /><ref name="s030" /> The "three nods" family is also not a simple set of synonyms: a 2025 lesson teaches <span lang="zh">金鸡三点头</span> (the Golden Rooster Nods Three Times) through examples in which a chariot kills an advisor and then gives two or three successive checks, and describes the pattern as "one check longer than <span lang="zh">进洞出洞</span>".<ref name="s014" />
== The classical position and the ''Elegant Pastime'' attribution ==
The position that the method is usually traced to is a classical endgame puzzle, and the published references name its source. The Lexicon's entry says plainly that "Figure 397 was collected in the ''Elegant Pastime Manual'' and was probably how the checkmate got its name".<ref name="png-445" /> ''Elegant Pastime'' (<span lang="zh">适情雅趣</span>) was first printed in 1570, the fourth year of the Longqing era; Xu Zhi of Jinling selected it and Chen Xueli of Kuaiji collated it, and it runs to ten volumes, of which the first six carry 550 named endgame diagrams, volumes seven and eight give the solutions, and volumes nine and ten hold the <span lang="zh">金鹏十八变</span> collection of complete games.<ref name="s043">东萍网友「667」供稿. The Lexicon's family of pawn mates gives the method its technical context. The pawn funeral checkmate is the general case: a lone pawn, helped by other pieces, delivers the final mate, and the pawn triple advancement attack is the usual mechanism. When a cannon is the assisting piece, the mate is the Repatriation of the Buddha Checkmate.<ref name="png-413" /> The Lexicon illustrates the pawn funeral checkmate with a position it credits to Tu Jingming's <span lang="zh">Xiangqi Dictionary</span> (屠景明《象棋词典》), in which two chariots are given up as decoys before the pawn mates: 1. R7=6 K4+1 2. R8=6 K4+1 3. P6+1 and so on to mate.<ref name="png-413" /> It notes that the mate can also be delivered as a smothered pawn checkmate, and that Black's own pawn can mate in the same way with P3=4 or P4+1, which would also count as a pawn funeral checkmate.<ref name="png-414" />

The pawn triple advancement attack entry supplies a game example for the wider attack: "This example was an actual game that was played in the World Xiangqi Championships in 1997. Red to go first. It is a textbook example of how one can use the attack." The example opens with a chariot move and a pawn advance in the centre and continues to a chariot mate.<ref name="png-416" /> The Lexicon distinguishes the outcomes by the assisting piece — cannon for the Buddha mate, king or chariot for the pawn funeral checkmate — and treats the two as named variants of the same pawn attack.<ref name="png-416" />

Repatriation of the Buddha (simplified Chinese: 送佛归殿; traditional Chinese: 送佛歸殿) is a basic checkmate pattern in xiangqi. A soldier, also called a pawn, advances with successive checks, forcing the opposing general back until it is mated. A cannon commonly supports the soldier, and a chariot or horse sacrifice may prepare the attack.[1][2]
Basic Xiangqi Checkmate Methods, published by the World Xiangqi Federation and the Chinese Xiangqi Association, includes the pattern among its twenty-six basic mating methods. Jim Png Hau Cheng's Lexicon of Xiangqi (Chinese Chess) Terms in English defines it as a cannon-and-pawn combination and attributes its example to the classical manual Elegant Pastime (适情雅趣).[2][1]
The name overlaps with 三进兵 (Three Soldier Advances) and 太监追皇帝 (the Eunuch Chases the Emperor), although reference works and teaching courses distinguish these terms in different ways. Examples use different supporting pieces and different numbers of soldier advances.[3][4][5][6]
Terminology and classification
Png describes Repatriation of the Buddha as an endgame technique in which a remaining pawn advances repeatedly with assistance from a cannon or its own general. His related entries distinguish the broader pawn attack from particular mating combinations:[1][3][4]
Pawn attacks and mates in Png's Lexicon
Term
Chinese name
Definition
Pawn Triple Advancement Attack
三进兵
A pawn advances repeatedly against the opposing general with help from other pieces, often leading to mate.[4]
Pawn Funeral Checkmate
独卒擒王, 太监追皇帝, 一卒送终
A lone pawn delivers mate with help from other pieces, usually through the triple advancement attack.[3]
Chinese instructional sources also use the names as alternatives. The 360 Baike entry lists 三进兵, 太监追皇上 (the Eunuch Chases the Emperor) and 凤凰三点头 (the Phoenix Nods Three Times) under 送佛归殿; a Sina Kandian primer lists the same group under 三进兵. The latter writes the emperor's name as 黄帝, the Yellow Emperor.[7][8]
The 4399 endgame guide uses 独卒擒王 (a lone soldier captures the general), with 一卒送终, 太监追皇帝 and 送佛归殿 as alternatives. It distinguishes this mate from 三进兵: in its definition, the former drives the general back to its starting square, whereas the latter may mate it elsewhere on the back rank.[5] Chinese Chess Out Loud's 2026 course likewise gives Repatriation of the Buddha, Pawn Triple Advancement and Eunuch Chasing the Emperor separate entries. Its Repatriation examples include support from the general as well as from a cannon.[6]
Png explains 一卒送终 through the image of a pawn conducting funeral rites for the opposing general, and 太监追皇帝 through that of a eunuch chasing an emperor. He also records “ghost”, “eunuch” and “servant” as pawn nicknames.[3][9] A 2026 lesson uses the variant 送佛归西 (seeing the Buddha home to the west).[10]
The similarly named 金鸡三点头 (the Golden Rooster Nods Three Times) is taught as a chariot attack in a 2025 lesson: the chariot captures an advisor and gives successive checks. It is described there as one check longer than 进洞出洞.[11]
Mechanism
A sacrifice can draw the general into the soldier's path. Png calls the opening chariot offer in his example a decoy sacrifice; the 2017 Baidu Experience tutorial describes the same tactical idea as 弃子吸引, sacrificing a piece to draw an opponent's piece onto the required square.[1][12]
The general must therefore retreat in the demonstrated positions, allowing another soldier check.[6] In the featured example, Red begins with 车八平六 (WXF R8=6), Black replies K4+1, and Red follows with three P6+1 checks. Black's chariot cannot capture the soldier without exposing its general to the cannon, or capture the cannon while leaving the soldier's check unanswered.[7][12]
The supporting piece need not be a cannon in every source's definition. The 4399 guide illustrates a soldier supported by its own general; capturing that soldier would leave the generals facing each other on an open file. Chinese Chess Out Loud demonstrates the same use of the flying-general rule.[5][6]
Despite the name Three Soldier Advances, the examples vary in length. The Baidu Experience tutorial gives two- and three-advance mates; the 4399 guide gives a four-advance mate; and Png's continuation to his classical example also requires four forward soldier moves.[12][5][1][13]
Worked examples
Cannon support
The featured board reproduces the chariot sacrifice and three soldier checks printed in the 360 Baike entry and the 2017 tutorial. The same tutorial also gives the shorter example below, in which Red checks immediately and mates on the soldier's second advance.[7][12]

General support and chariot sacrifices
The 4399 guide gives two examples of 独卒擒王. In the first, four soldier advances force the black general back and then across to the centre file, where the final soldier move mates. The red general prevents the soldier's capture.[5]
Loading xiangqi example…
In the second example, Red first sacrifices two chariots on the general's file, then completes the same four-advance soldier mate.[5] Png illustrates his Pawn Funeral Checkmate entry with a similar two-chariot decoy sequence, credited to Tu Jingming's Xiangqi Dictionary: 1. R7=6 K4+1 2. R8=6 K4+1 3. P6+1, followed by further soldier advances.[3]
Loading xiangqi example…
The 360 Baike entry for 三进兵 also gives a double-chariot sacrifice against a general whose own cannon occupies the palace centre; a 2024 lesson titled the Eunuch Chases the Emperor begins with a double-chariot sacrifice.[14][15]
Preparing the formation
In a 2025 combination study by 橘梅象棋, Red must prepare the soldier mate through a chariot, horse and cannon attack. The lesson explains that advancing the soldier too soon obstructs Red's own horse leg (憋马腿), allowing the black general to escape. Red must reposition the horse; the presenter identifies 八角马, a diagonal attacking placement, as a suitable formation. The final combination ends in the cannon-and-soldier mate.[16]

Textbook variations
Basic Xiangqi Checkmate Methods illustrates the method in figures 97–99. The first example starts R3=4 K6+1. Red's soldier then makes four advances and a sideways move before the chariot mates with R4=6. The alternative defence K6=5 is answered by P4+1 K5=4 R4=6.[2]
The second example sacrifices a chariot and horse before four soldier advances complete the mate: 1. R6+4 K5=4 2. H9+8 K4+1 3. H8-6 K4+1 4. P7=6 H2+4, followed by the P6+1 checks. The book explains that the sacrifices draw the general to the front of its palace, into the cannon-and-soldier attack.[2]
The final example begins R8=6 C8=4 R6+1 K4+1 and ends in what the book describes as simultaneous smothered mate by the horse and soldier.[2]
Classical example
Png attributes figure 397 of his Lexicon to Elegant Pastime and suggests that the position may explain the checkmate's name.[1] The manual, first printed in 1570, was compiled by Xu Zhi and collated by Chen Xueli. Its ten volumes contain 550 named endgame positions in the first six volumes, solutions in volumes seven and eight, and the 金鹏十八变 collection of complete games in the last two.[17][18] The 2024 Xiangqi for Chess Players lesson also attributes its example to Elegant Pastime.[19]
The position reproduced below is indexed in modern transcriptions as volume 3, position 209, 叁参见佛. Its recorded result is a Red win, with the annotation 红弃车马,兵胜 (Red sacrifices the chariot and horse; the soldier wins).[20][21]
Elegant Pastime, volume 3, position 209, printed as 參參見佛. Peking University Library copy, digitised as CADAL02095149. The annotation reads 白棄車馬卒勝: “White sacrifices the chariot and horse; the soldier wins”.[22]
Loading xiangqi example…
The recorded line ends at 5. P6+1, the soldier's first forward move after 4. P7=6. Png explicitly distinguishes the ancient manual's stopping point from his added continuation: 5. ... K4-1 6. P6+1 K4-1 7. P6+1 K4=5 8. P6+1, ending in mate. His opening move is R6+1, whereas the federation manual's second example begins R6+4.[1][13][2] The historical puzzle is catalogued under 叁参见佛; Png discusses the mating method under 送佛归殿.[21][1]
A Kangxi-era Dunhua Huaide Hall woodblock edition of Elegant Pastime is held by Lanzhou Municipal Library. A 2022 library account records its inclusion in Gansu's provincial register of precious ancient books in 2013. The National Central Library's union catalogue also records a Kangxi-era copy in the Palace Museum library.[23][24]
Related pawn methods
Png's Pawn Funeral Checkmate entry includes smothered pawn mates as well as the advancing-pawn examples. It also illustrates Black mating with a sideways P3=4 or a forward P4+1.[9] His Pawn Triple Advancement Attack entry gives an example attributed to the 1997 World Xiangqi Championships, introduced through a chariot move and an advance by a central pawn. In that entry, the supporting piece distinguishes the named mating forms: cannon support produces Repatriation of the Buddha, while general or chariot support produces Pawn Funeral Checkmate.[4]

Chinese teaching series present the pattern among basic mating methods: 象棋-老云's 2020 course lists it as lesson 30, and a 2025 series by 爱下棋的冉帅 teaches Three Soldier Advances among thirty-four basic methods.[25][26] A 2019 report by Sergej Korchitskij and Andrei Kaspiarovich documents a Russian-language introductory course whose ninth lesson includes both 送佛归殿 and 太监追皇帝.[27]
A 2019 walkthrough of endgame-challenge level 79 in Tencent's Tian Tian Xiangqi describes a chariot sacrifice that establishes Repatriation of the Buddha, followed by soldier advances. The app also offers courses and exercises in basic mating methods.[28][29]
The 2024 Xiangqi for Chess Players beginner series devotes lesson 28 to the method, explaining the chariot and horse sacrifices and the finishing soldier advance.[19] Chinese Chess Out Loud's Every Basic Kill in Xiangqi Explained (2026) states that it follows Tian Tian Xiangqi material for student level 3. Its Repatriation section, beginning at 3:15:14, presents seven examples: direct soldier advances behind a cannon; preparation to bring the soldier into position; use of the defender's own pieces to restrict the general or to provide a cannon screen; general support; and a final mate combining the soldier's check with a discovered horse check.[6]
Other uses of the name
The Chinese name 送佛归殿 is also used in Go. The 360 Baike entry describes it as a method of capturing stones when a ladder (征子) is unfavourable. A 2021 Go lesson uses the name for a capturing puzzle involving liberties.[7][30] The phrase also appears in a 2023 column title about the Chinese trick-taking card game 双升.[31]
Notation
The examples use WXF notation alongside Chinese move names. File numbers are counted from each player's own side. In Chinese notation, 进 indicates a forward move, 退 a backward move and 平 a sideways move. Thus 车八平六, written R8=6 in WXF notation, moves the chariot from file eight to file six.[32]
In these WXF lines, R denotes a chariot, H a horse, C a cannon, P a soldier and K a general; + indicates an advance, - a retreat and = a sideways move. The numbers identify the starting file and the destination file or distance moved, according to the piece and direction of movement. Each side uses its own file numbers.[33]
